You know it's Barney's when you see the signature red awnings. Even though this outlet of the upscale American retailer is on the edge of Kabukicho, it hasn't given in to the area's seedier side. It maintains a double-volume columned entrance, and faux neoclassical terraces on its two street-facing sides. The corners windows are actually windows to feature the latest fashions. The side windows are mere insets to allow for more display space inside. And, boy, does this store need it. The available display space on each floor is about the size of an average American bedroom. Narrow escalators carry customers to the ever-higher floors that wouldn't be so dizzying if there was some room to breathe, but there simply isn't. Because of the limited space available, this outpost is great for picking up a few necessities; but if you're going to do some serious shopping head for the branch in Ginza.
